​South Fork American River, below Chili Bar Dam

South Fork American River winds through oak-studded river valleys and canyons on its way to Folsom Lake. This 20 mile stretch of river is offers a plethora of water recreation choices. Water release is controlled by Pacific Gas and Electric Company. Spring snowmelt is stored in SMUD's large reservoirs and released during the long periods of low natural runoff to provide exceptionally popular Class III whitewater boating all year including during dry years.
