Military outreach
SMUD honors the men and women who proudly serve our nation
Thank you for your service to protect and defend our country! At SMUD, we hold the same values: leadership, community, integrity and ingenuity. The skills you learned in the military would be a great fit at SMUD: leadership, community, duty, loyalty, ingenuity, planning and preparation, mission execution, employee development, decision making and teamwork.
Why choose SMUD for your post-military career?
We serve our community by powering the Sacramento area with affordable, reliable and clean energy. Your commitment to service and community are what make you a great fit for SMUD.
Veterans are a great source of talent for SMUD. SMUD is committed to the outreach and recruitment of our veterans, as well as our compliance to the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA). USERRA is a federal statute that protects servicemembers’ and veterans’ civilian employment rights. Among other things, under certain conditions, USERRA requires employers to put individuals back to work in their civilian jobs after military service. USERRA also protects servicemembers from discrimination in the workplace based on their military service or affiliation.
Our dedication and compliance to our veteran community was recognized in May of 2019 with the Pro Patria Award by the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) for our efforts in fostering and supporting a work environment in which military veterans and reservists can thrive.
Applying for a civilian job is very different from enlisting and promoting within the military.
Please refrain from using military jargon or acronyms. Relate your military experience and training to the position you are applying for, and write in a way that the average civilian would understand. Focus on skills that relate to the position in which you are applying.
SMUD uses behavioral based interviewing. Use the STAR method to prepare for the interview: ST = Situation, task, or scenario; A = Actions taken, what was said and done, thoughts and feelings; R = Results, What was the outcome, how did the person feel about the outcome.
We love our military employees.
