Residential customers

The Energy Assistance Program Rate (EAPR) provides a monthly discount on a qualified customer's energy bill. First, find out if you qualify using the tool below and then get access to the online application.  See common discount amounts

Nonprofits

If you run a nonprofit that provides housing or temporary shelter for low-income residents, you may be eligible for a nonprofit discount.

Billing assistance

We offer several other options to help you pay your bill:

  • Payment arrangements -  See if you qualify for an installment plan or a minimum payment plan.
  • Medical equipment discount -  We may be able to help if you have higher electricity costs because of your medical equipment.
  • Paperless billing - Receive an email when your bill is ready. You can view, pay and track it all online with My Account.

Financial assistance

Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP)

You may qualify for more financial help through the Community Resource Project. Priority may be given to applicants based on the greatest need and income, vulnerable populations and households with young children. Learn more about HEAP

In addition to SMUD's EAPR discount, eligible customers qualify for SMUD's Energy Saver Bundle, which is a no-cost in-person energy evaluation of your home. A dedicated Energy Specialist will let you know how much energy each of your appliances uses and the best times to use them. 

The assessment is designed to offer simple tips to help you save money on your electric bill. In addition, you'll:

  • find out how to improve the air quality in your home
  • get safety tips
  • get answers to all of your energy-related questions

Free electric vehicle (EV) charger and installation

Income-eligible customers may qualify for a free EV charger or a free EV charger and circuit installation.

Broadband discount

Qualified customers can receive a discount up to $30 per month for internet service with the FCC's Affordable Connectivity Program.

Vulnerable Population program

We notify all customers of a de-energization event, but customers who opt-in to the Vulnerable Population program receive additional communications pre-wildfire season and potentially during the season. 

Free tax prep

As a SMUD customer on EAPR, you can save an average of $200 in tax preparation fees and may qualify for thousands of dollars in credits. Learn more at yourfreetaxprep.org.
