Habitat for Humanity

Through our Sustainable Communities program, SMUD has partnered with Habitat for Humanity to help build and upgrade homes for 50 families in need.

SMUD has worked with Habitat for Humanity for many years, providing energy upgrades and volunteers to build low-cost, energy-efficient homes. However, with the current affordable housing shortage amidst the devastating COVID-19 pandemic, we felt the need to expand our partnership and assist hard-working families with long-term, secure housing.

“We’re so excited that with SMUD’s help, we can provide even more hardworking, low-income families in need with safe, decent and affordable shelter,” said Habitat Greater Sacramento President and CEO, Leah Miller.

Of the 50 homes, many of them will be all-electric and feature a variety of energy upgrades, including solar panels, EV charging, electric appliances and weatherization to ensure that energy costs are minimized for the new homeowners. 

This $1.1 million partnership meets all of the goals of our Sustainable Communities program in that it aids in infrastructure improvements, underserved community development and creates a healthy environment by improving air quality and reducing carbon emissions.
