City Church

SMUD has teamed up with Sustainable Communities partner, City Church, to convert their 1956 sanctuary into an energy-efficient, multi-purpose community room to better serve the needs of its congregation and the families in its surrounding Oak Park neighborhood.

SMUD supplied funds and an updated lighting plan that allowed City Church to install new LED fixtures in their sanctuary, providing greater flexibility, savings and improved energy efficiency.

“We were able to identify and help City Church maximize energy efficiency rebates and incentives, including a $50,000 partnership through our Sustainable Communities program,” said Community Resource Liaison, Courtney Beal.

Since the renovation, the church’s multi-purpose community room has served as a place for low-income students to sign up for SMUD’s Solar@Home virtual summer programming that promotes STEM curriculum. And more recently, the community space opened up as a new COVID-19 vaccination site for Oak Park community members aged 65 or older.

“The City Church project is a great example of how through innovative energy solutions, we’re helping to bring environmental equity and economic vitality to neighborhoods across our service area,” added Sustainable Communities Director, Jose Bodipo-Memba. “Especially in the midst of a pandemic, I couldn’t be prouder of the work we’re doing to support organizations that are helping our customers get through these difficult times.”
