ChargeReady Community Project
Background
SMUD and Mutual Housing California are installing electric vehicle (EV) chargers at 11 multi-family housing locations in Sacramento, benefiting over 900 homes.
The project aims to promote equitable access to electric transportation, address installation challenges in multi-family housing, reduce charging costs, provide charging convenience, facilitate access to vehicles, and provide outreach and education to tenants.
The project is supported by grant funding from the California Energy Commission (CEC).
This project is a collaboration between SMUD, Mutual Housing California, The California Energy Commission (CEC) and the Sac Metro Air District.
EV chargers will be installed at up to 11 Mutual Housing locations throughout Sacramento. (See map below.)

Why are Mutual Housing and SMUD installing chargers in my apartment complex?
Having convenient and reliable charging is important, and we’re looking to make chargers accessible for those living in multi-family dwellings. The idea is to make charging available to incentivize the use of EVs in your community.
When will construction, the survey and the workshop take place in my community?
Construction schedule, survey and workshop times and updates will be posted on this page when available.
Where can I attend the workshop?
Workshops will take place at the community room at your apartment complex.
How will construction impact parking and my routine?
We want to minimize any inconvenience to you. We will inform you of any potential disruptions on this page.
Will the installation of chargers reduce the number of available parking spaces?
The number of available parking spaces will not be reduced. A few parking spaces will eventually be reserved for EVs only.
Can I park my gas vehicle in a parking spot with a charger?
Initially, yes. But eventually, parking spaces with chargers will be reserved for EVs only. Please check signs posted at the parking spaces for up-to-date information.
Will the survey and workshop be provided in multiple languages?
The survey and workshop [maybe just the recording] will be provided in Spanish, Russian and Tagalog.
If I have any questions about the ChargeReady Community Project, who should I contact?
Please email ChargeReady@smud.org if you have any questions or comments regarding the project.
Outreach
Mutual Housing and SMUD are excited to bring residents the benefits of electric transportation, starting with the installation of electric vehicle (EV) chargers at Mutual Housing’s communities (multi-family housing sites).
Providing a convenient, reliable and affordable way to charge an EV is just the beginning. We’ll also provide information to help residents decide if an EV is right for them, either through purchasing, leasing or using shared vehicles.
To give us a better understanding of tenants' knowledge and interest in EVs, we’ll be conducting a survey and hosting workshops at each community (apartment complex). The workshop will be an opportunity for tenants to learn about electric vehicles and EV charging as well as explore options to purchase or lease a new or used EV.
Survey
We’d like to know your thoughts about EVs so we can better tailor our efforts to meet your needs and expectations. Survey participants will be entered into a drawing for a $100 Amazon gift card.
For your convenience, you can take the survey here: ChargeReady Community Engagement Survey
Note: Maximum of one gift card per household.
Workshop
The workshop will take place after construction is complete. Check this page for more information.
The workshop will cover information about EVs, such as available types, driving ranges, costs, rebates and incentives, as well as how and where to charge.
We will provide a $5 gift card to those who attend a workshop.
Note: Maximum of one gift card per household.
