SMUD Museum of Science and Curiosity opens right here in River City
The opening of the SMUD Museum of Science & Curiosity (MOSAC) marked the first time that SMUD attached its name to any building other than one of its own.
The title sponsorship shows how strongly SMUD feels about inspiring the youth of today and tomorrow to explore the wonders of science, technology and engineering. The conversion of a dilapidated powerhouse into a sparkling science museum was many years in the making, and pushed across the finish line in significant part by SMUD’s support.
MOSAC provides science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM) educational opportunities for students across the Sacramento region - particularly those living in underserved communities. The 50,000-square-foot museum features upstairs and downstairs galleries with interactive exhibits focused on space, astronomy, nature, water, and energy and climate.
One of the most popular exhibits, “Nature Detectives,” features an interactive gallery with live creatures, including a beehive.
MOSAC will also serve to spur business and economic development along one of the city’s most attractive assets - the Sacramento riverfront.
