The 2021 annual report highlights a watershed year as we built on SMUD’s reputation for environmental leadership to take the boldest climate action of any large utility in the United States.
With the SMUD Board’s approval of our 2030 Zero Carbon Plan, we began our ambitious journey to eliminate all carbon from our power supply by 2030. We continued to support our customers and community as we navigated through the COVID-19 pandemic, securing $41 million in government financial assistance for those impacted by the pandemic. For the first time in SMUD’s history, we put our name on a building other than one of our own: the new SMUD Museum of Science & Curiosity, bringing the wonders of science, technology, engineering and math to people of all ages.

Transforming SMUD for the future
In his first full year as CEO and General Manager, Paul Lau set the foundation for a cleaner and more equitable future. From advocating for clean air and energy while testifying before Congress, to hiring SMUD's first director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Lau is making sure we are leaders in the Sacramento Region and beyond.
Building a Clean PowerCity®
In April, the SMUD Board of Directors unanimously approved our 2030 Zero Carbon Plan.
The Plan is our road map to eliminate all carbon emissions from our power supply by 2030, the most ambitious goal of any large utility in the United States. Our region's poor air quality, increased risk of childhood asthma and extreme weather events like droughts and wildfire require us to act quickly.
By focusing on both proven and new clean technologies, we'll transition away from the use of natural gas, including closing two of our power plants by 2025 and re-tooling others to operate on clean fuel.
We'll accomplish all this while continuing to provide reliable and affordable electricity and ensuring no communities are left behind.
Board approves new Solar + Storage rate
The new, more equitable Solar + Storage rate incentivizes customers to add battery storage.
Replacing our Net Energy Metering rate, introduced in 1998, our new rooftop Solar + Storage rate is part of a comprehensive, industry leading package of rates and programs that will help transition the market from solar only to solar and storage, which provides wider benefits to all customers. Incentives of up to $2,500 are available for customers who invest in energy storage.
In addition to the Solar + Storage Rate, SMUD also approved an optional Critical Peak Pricing rate and Virtual Solar program for multi-family housing in historically under-resourced communities.
Museum of Science and Curiosity opens
Transforming an old powerhouse into a hands-on science museum.
Continuing our commitment to our community and science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education, the SMUD Museum of Science and Curiosity (MOSAC) provides educational opportunities to people of all ages, through interactive hands-on displays, educational programs and events.
SMUD MOSAC is helping transform the Sacramento riverfront and features a planetarium and exhibits on space, energy, climate and more.
