Documents initiating a lawsuit (e.g., summons and complaint; notice and petition) must be made by personal service to the SMUD Legal Department by visiting the lobby at the SMUD Headquarters Building along with a check to SMUD for any required fees. No appointment is needed for service of papers between the hours of 9 AM and 3 PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please call 1-916-732-6119 to make an appointment for personal service outside of these days and times. Service of legal proceedings such as subpoenas, notices and warrants must also be made by personal service at the SMUD Headquarters Building unless alternative arrangements have been requested and approved in advance by emailing Legal@smud.org with a cc: to Jenna.Cotton@smud.org. If alternative arrangements have been made, service will be considered complete only upon the sender’s receipt of a return email confirming SMUD has reviewed and accepted service.
Energy Trading & Contracts
Energy Trading & Contracts is responsible for the development, procurement and administration of long, medium and short-term power, electric transmission and natural gas contracts. This department also manages the day-to-day dispatch of generation resources and market trading activities to maintain adequate, cost-effective supplies of natural gas to SMUD's thermal power plants.

Reliability & Compliance
Reliability & Compliance manages the Internal Compliance Programs associated with Operational Reliability and Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) Standards and requirements required by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC), and the Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC). In addition, the team also manages new developments to the rules and regulations that impact reliability functions and operations, best practices, and internal controls, ensuring coordination internally and with external industry counterparts, experts and officials.
