2023 February CDP Climate A List Company Carbon reduction efforts

CDP logo with tagline saying Disclosure, Insight, ActionSMUD earned a score of A- by the global environmental nonprofit CDP, highlighting our work related to climate impacts, risks and opportunities, and actions to cut carbon emissions, mitigate risks and develop a low-carbon economy.

In our 6th year of disclosing with CDP (formerly Carbon Disclosure Project), our score is higher than the North American regional average of C and the thermal power generation sector average of B. Within our sector (thermal power generation), we’re among the 36% of companies that reached the leadership level (A or A-).

J.D. Power Sustainability Index - 1st

SMUD ranked 1st in the 2023 J.D. Power Sustainability Index, a comprehensive evaluation of the nation’s largest electric utilities’ customer awareness, engagement and advocacy related to their local climate sustainability programs and goals. Drawing from established J.D. Power customer satisfaction and environmental metrics, the index includes 35 of the largest U.S. electric utility companies with 500,000 or more residential customers, serving as an industry benchmark to assess the utility's standing as a climate leader. 

The J.D. Power Sustainability Index recognition underscores our customers’ awareness and perceived value of the direction we’re moving with our 2030 Clean Energy Vision and our goal to eliminate carbon emissions in our power supply by 2030 – the most ambitious carbon reduction goal of any large utility in the United States.

J.D. Power Business Customer Satisfaction - 2nd

""For the 13thtime since 2010, SMUD scored highest among all California utilities in the J.D. Power business satisfaction survey, with a score of 796 out of 1,000.

The J.D. Power 2023 Electric Utility Business Customer Satisfaction Study surveyed more than 17,683 business customers from 79 utilities across the country to measure customer satisfaction. The study examines 6 key factors for satisfaction: Power Quality and Reliability, Price, Billing and Payment, Corporate Citizenship, Communications and Customer Contact.

SMUD ranked 2ndin Overall Satisfaction and scored above the West Midsize and Industry averages in every category in the key study areas.

Zpryme/NPUC Clean Energy Community Advocacy Award 2030 Zero Carbon Plan and Community Impact Plan

The National Public Utilities Council selected SMUD for the Clean Energy Community Advocacy Award, recognizing the community outreach efforts that are built into our 2030 Zero Carbon Plan. Our outreach was successful in engaging, educating and inspiring our community to participate in zero carbon initiatives.

Escalent Environmental Champion

SMUD was named as 1 of 30 utilities recognized for our dedication to the environment based on Escalent's Cogent Syndicated 2023 Utility Trusted Brand & Customer Engagement TM: Residential study.

Escalent conducted surveys among 76,100 residential electric, natural gas and combination utility customers of the 141 largest U.S. utility companies (based on residential customer counts).

2023 August Oracle Change Agents, The Earthfirst Award for Excellence in Sustainability

Software company Oracle recognized SMUD with the 2023 Earthfirst Award for Excellence in Sustainability for our partnership with Oracle Energy and Water to deliver a decarbonization program for customers that supports our 2030 Clean Energy Vision. The program utilizes AI, behavioral science and personalized analytics to gain customer insights that will support our decarbonization efforts and further the integration of Distributed Energy Resources.

2022 Greenhouse Gas Inventory TCR Platinum status

SMUD was awarded Climate Registered™ Platinum status by The Climate Registry (formerly the California Climate Action Registry or CCAR). The recognition is attributed to our reporting of third-party verified greenhouse gas emissions inventory for operations in 2022.

The Climate Registry is a nonprofit organization that empowers organizations to do more in the fight against climate change and operates the Carbon Footprint Registry, which is North America’s largest voluntary registry for greenhouse gas emissions. It’s the 5th consecutive year we’ve held the platinum level of recognition and it’s the second highest tier of recognition awarded by TCR.

Business Environmental Resource Center (BERC) certification and awards

Three of SMUD’s buildings (Headquarters, Customer Service Center, and Field Reporting Facility) were certified by BERC in 6 conservation categories: Energy Conservation, Solid Waste Reduction, Green Building, Water Conservation, Pollution Prevention and Air Quality/Transportation. The program certifies businesses who prioritize environmental compliance and exemplify environmental stewardship in Sacramento County. This achievement recognized SMUD’s commitment to environmental sustainability and contribution towards the goals of the Sacramento County Climate Action Plan.

SMUD is also the presenting sponsor of the Sustainable Business Awards, which were given in the categories “SMUD Clean Power City: Sustainable Building Award” and “SMUD Clean Power City: Carbon Free Transportation Award.” These awards were presented to 2 businesses who exemplified environmental sustainability through their efforts in working with SMUD on projects that supported an eco-friendly future for the region.

2023 Smart Electric Power Alliance (SEPA) 2023 Utility Transformation Leaderboard Utilities Leader

SEPA recognized SMUD as a leader in utility transformation toward a carbon-free electric system. SMUD was recognized as one of 14 utilities nationwide who have demonstrated the greatest progress in the areas of: clean energy resources, corporate leadership, modern grid enablement and aligned actions and engagement.

SEPA collected survey responses from more than 100 individual utility members, spanning 41 states nationwide, and representing over 50% of U.S. customer accounts.
