The 2022 annual report highlights the significant foundational work to deliver on our commitment of eliminating carbon from our power supply by 2030, as we enhanced our strong reputation for environmental leadership by implementing the boldest climate action plan of any large utility in the United States.

While we prioritized making progress with our 2030 Zero Carbon Plan in 2022, we did so with the commitment to reliability, affordability and equity. With the guidance and leadership of our Board of Directors, we finalized our Community Impact Plan to solidify our commitment to bringing all our customers along, especially those from under-resourced communities. We made new investments in increasing our capacity in infrastructure and technology to support our growing region’s clean energy future and engaged our community to partner with us in making our region a Clean PowerCity.®

SMUD continues bold journey to clean energy

CEO & General Manager Paul Lau led SMUD in making critical progress toward our ambitious goal of a cleaner and more equitable future, including milestones in delivering on our 2030 Zero Carbon Plan, taking a large step forward in our Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging efforts and completing capacity projects that support grid reliability and will make our power supply cleaner.

Significant progress toward a clean energy future

SMUD’s 2030 Zero Carbon Plan was approved by the SMUD Board in April 2021. So, 2022 was all about hitting the ground running and starting to make considerable progress on our path to a clean energy future. We began delivering on the key components of our plan, including significant outreach, customer engagement, securing new clean energy resources and extensive studies to ensure continued world-class reliability to support the most aggressive carbon reduction goal of any large utility in the United States.

To ensure our under-resourced customers and small and medium-size businesses reap the benefits of a zero-carbon future, we created our Community Impact Plan in partnership with external community partners. Targeted outreach, customized programs and communications strategies will create better access to clean energy solutions for these hard-to-reach customers.

Investing in infrastructure

In 2022, we made major progress on capacity projects that support grid reliability and a cleaner power supply. These include progress in securing more renewable power resources, planning for new substations and bringing our newest substation online.

A new technology platform, which is critical to reaching our 2030 goals, went live in early September of 2022. This innovative effort will help maximize the value of distributed energy resources by optimizing the customer-sited resources that are connected to the grid, bringing more benefits to SMUD and our customers, and getting us closer to a carbon-free future.
