Time-of-Day (5-8 p.m.) Rate
Standard rate for residential customers
Rate details
- The price for electricity varies based on the time of day you use it.
- Save on your electricity bill when you conserve energy during peak hours (weekdays from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.).
- Additional discounts and incentives are available for customers with electric vehicles, solar or battery storage.
- Helps reduce grid strain and support a cleaner environment when shifting energy use to off-peak hours.

Critical Peak Pricing
Rate details
- Get a discount on energy throughout the summer in exchange for higher prices during Peak Events, when the grid is stressed.
- Peak Events can be called any time of the day during the summer months and will last 1 to 4 hours.
- During non-summer months, the time periods and prices are the same as the Time-of-Day Rate.
- Uses the My Energy Optimizer® for thermostats program to help keep energy affordable and reliable.
Fixed Rate
Rate details
- The Fixed Rate is, on average, 4% higher than the Time-of-Day (5-8 p.m.) Rate.
- The price for electricity is set by season.
- You pay the same electricity rate for all hours of the day.

Time periods
- Peak = Weekdays between 5 PM and 8 PM.
- Mid-peak = Weekdays between noon and midnight (except during peak hours).
- Off-peak = All other hours, including weekends and holidays.
System Infrastructure Fixed Charge (SIFC)
The SIFC is a fixed monthly charge that helps pay for things like poles, wires, transformers, meter equipment, billing and customer service costs, including the Contact Center.
Current SIFC: $24.80 per month
SMUD's rates are among the lowest in California, and on average more than 50% lower than those of neighboring PG&E.
